My father passed down his leather jacket from the 1980s, and while it has tremendous sentimental value, it needs significant restoration work. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth the investment or if I should preserve it as-is and buy something new for actual wear.
The jacket itself appears to be high quality - thick leather, solid construction, classic styling that's actually come back into fashion. However, the leather has dried out considerably, there are several small tears, and the lining is torn in multiple places.
I've gotten quotes from leather repair specialists ranging from $200-400 depending on how much restoration work is done. That's approaching the cost of a decent new best men leather jacket, though obviously not the same league as high-end options.
The sentimental aspect makes this more complicated than a purely financial decision. Wearing something my father wore feels meaningful, but only if it's actually functional and looks respectable. I don't want to invest in restoration if the result will be obviously repaired or fragile.
Has anyone dealt with similar restoration decisions? What factors helped you decide? I'm particularly interested in hearing about long-term durability after professional restoration - does restored leather hold up as well as original?
